After a rest up of the weary legs, the second part of the day involved negotiating the subway system to the lower part of Manhattan. The subways were not fully operational, but took me as far as the Brooklyn Bridge – then, no surprises here, a bit more walking.
NY Subway is very different from London & Paris, closer to the surface so nowhere near as many steps – but – and I discovered this in just enough time to get off before heading into the depths of Brooklyn…not all subway trains stop at all stations (just like the usual express trains overground), but there was no way to tell till you were on the train and underway, so attention needed to prevent a long ride back to where you’d just come from.
Get’s dark early and so was very odd to be walking about Lower Manhattan, with lots of people, police, utility workers (6000 linesmen were working on restoring Manhattan power!), but in almost darkness. A bit like walking through a ghost town.
Ground Zero
Still a bit wet down this end of town
Last remaining WTC structure
Rebuild well underway
I loved the portable NYPD control tower
Battery Park – A bit battered about 🙁
NYSE
Bull Market
Any guesses on what this is actually used for? Answers next post
